Footprints in the snow make for easy arrest by Vernon RCMP

By following tracks in the snow, Vernon RCMP officers were able to arrest a man who moments earlier had broken into a nearby property.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, the 47-year-old suspect fled a property when disturbed by the homeowner, but left a clear path through the snow for police to follow allowing them to make an arrest.

On Jan. 15 at roughly 1:15 p.m. a homeowner returned to their Black Rock Road property in Vernon and heard someone moving about upstairs. Thinking the sounds were coming from a family member the homeowner thought nothing of it, until an unknown man walked down the stairs carrying two bags. The man dropped one of the bags and walked out of the front door when confronted by the homeowner.

The RCMP were called and when they arrived at the property followed tracks through the snow to a shed at a nearby property. The 47-year suspect was found hiding in a snowbank next to the shed and was arrested without incident. The stolen goods taking during the break-in were also recovered.

"The one good thing about all this freshly fallen snow is it made it relatively easy for our front line officers to follow the suspect." Corp. Tania Finn said in the release.

The 47-year-old man of no fixed address remains in custody and was charged with break and enter and theft.
