MIAMI - Miami city commissioners are considering a ban on the retail sale of dogs.
The commissioners gave tentative approval Thursday to a six-month moratorium on new stores selling dogs or cats while officials consider an outright ban on commercial sales of the animals.
The Miami Herald reports (http://hrld.us/1uyMnGH ) that the commission acted at the urging of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. The group says retail pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills, and the unhealthy animals frequently end up in animal shelters.
No pet store owners spoke during the commission meeting.
The commission must approve the moratorium a second time for it to take effect.
North Miami Beach and other South Florida cities have banned the commercial sale of puppies.
