First breast cancer support group coming to Kamloops

KAMLOOPS - A new support group in Kamloops is hoping to help women who have been diagnosed or are recovering from breast cancer.

Biruta Groves, a member of the Kamloops Spirit Warriors dragonboat team for breast cancer survivors, says her team was approached by the Canadian Breast Cancer Society to see if they were interested in attending a workshop in Vancouver to learn how to run a support group.

Groves says she has first hand experience in knowing how difficult it can be to find the right support systems when going through breast cancer treatment.

"I know that it is something that is needed desperately," Groves says. "When I was diagnosed five years ago, I would have done everything to have a group to go to, to talk. I know everyone on our team says exactly the same thing."

It can be harder for women in cities like Kamloops, where they can receive chemotherapy treatment but often have to travel hours away to receive radiation, Groves says, so it's important to have support groups of other women going through the same thing.

"We’re very passionate about it," she says. "If we could help one woman to feel better that would be worth it."

Groves says people have been willing to donate their time and resources to make this happen. SIXTY84 Designs has made a logo while The Yoga Loft downtown lets the group hold a meeting there every third Monday of the month.

For the first meeting, Groves says up to 20 people are expected.

"We’re very excited about it and the more we advertise, the more we’re getting a little scared we’re going to have too many people," Groves laughs.

The meetings will be permanent and will take place every third Monday starting May 15 at 7:15 p.m. in downtown Kamloops at 409 Seymour Street.
