Fireworks are believed to have started a structure fire in Vernon this morning.

Firefighters were called to the 6500 block of Blue Jay Road shortly before 1 a.m. today, June 29, according to a release from Vernon Fire Rescue Services.

Crews arrived to find the entrance of the home involved in flames and the fire was extending into the attic and burning through the roof.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attic.

“There was extensive damage to the entire structure due to the roof collapsing and fire operations,” deputy fire chief Alan Hofsink said in the release. “Crews remained on site for the duration of the night and began an investigation this morning.”

Two people and a dog were in the home when the fire started and they all escaped safely. No injuries were reported. The family received assistance from Emergency Support Services.

The cause of the fire "is suspected to have involved fireworks," the release says.

Members of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, BC Ambulance Service, FortisBC and BC Hydro were also called to the scene.

Vernon firefighters are reminding the public that fireworks are illegal in the city without a permit.

“This is particularly important to remember ahead of the Canada Day long weekend,” the release says. “The possession, storage, or discharge of fireworks without a permit may result in a fine of up to $300 and multiple fines may be issued for a single infraction.”
