Firefighters douse hedge fire outside Kamloops restaurant

Kamloops Fire Rescue was called to Earl's in on the night of June 10, 2024.

Kamloops firefighters took care of a blaze in front of a restaurant Monday night before it spread to the building itself.

On June 10, fire crews were called to Earl's on Columbia Street, where cedar hedges went up in flames leaving cosmetic damage to the building.

Jeff Pont, Life Safety Educator with Kamloops Fire Rescue, said the fire would have spread to the building if it had not been doused in time. The paint on an outer wall was damaged along with windows in front of the patio.

Pont said investigators were not able to determine the exact cause of the fire because the hedge burned so hot and so quickly destroying evidence.

A shopping cart was in front of the burnt hedges Tuesday morning. A building caretaker at the restaurant said drug users often shelter themselves within the shrubs and they suspected some connection to the fire.

Although the cause won't be determined, Pont said cedar hedges can burn quickly and present a high fire risk.

He encouraged property owners who have questions about removing cedar hedges, or other efforts they can make to reduce fire risk, to call him at 250-320-7641.
