The fire was first seen by residents this afternoon, June 26, shortly before 1 p.m.

A resident, who declined to be named, said black smoke is highly visible from Ashcroft.

The BC Wildfire Service is currently responding to the wildfire that is located approximately two kilometres east of Highway 1 near the village, according to the service.

Currently three personnel are responding to the fire who are being supported by one helicopter and the local fire department.

"This was a structure fire that spread to the nearby wildland area and is 3.5 hectares in size," according to the wildfire service.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

More to come.
