Firefighters battled blaze in Kamloops cemetery

A fire that started in a Kamloops graveyard yesterday afternoon attracted a fair amount of attention online.

Videos posted on social media show smoke and flames that appear to be billowing out of JYSK in the Summit Drive Shopping Centre, but Kamloops Fire Rescue platoon captain Darryl Cooper said the fire was actually located behind the store as cedar bushes had caught fire.

Four engines responded to a landscape fire located in Hillside Cemetery.

The fire was roughly 30 metres by three metres in size. Firefighters used 400 gallons of water and foam to dose the fire.

There was no damage to nearby structures, Cooper said.

Reports to the fire department were made at 7:25 p.m. and firefighters left the scene at 9:20 p.m., he said.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated but is unknown at this time, Cooper said.
