SICAMOUS - Two people are now in custody after stealing the vehicle belonging to an off-duty firefighter who stopped to help them after a collision.

On the evening of Tuesday, May 8, Sicamous RCMP responded to a report of a collision involving a transport truck and a Ford F350 pickup truck, three kilometers west of Sicamous on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Witnesses reported the pickup truck was travelling westbound when the collision took place, according to an RCMP media release. The pickup truck hit the trailer of the transport truck as it crossed into the eastbound lane. The pickup truck rolled into the eastbound ditch.

A man and a woman got out of the vehicle and began to ask stopping motorists for a ride from the collision.

B.C. Ambulance Service and Eagle Valley Rescue arrived on scene, as well as an off-duty Sicamous firefighter. The man and woman then stole the firefighter's vehicle.

Police say witnesses observed the male suspect driving westbound at a high rate of speed in a Honda Civic with the female in the passenger seat.

RCMP discovered that the suspects’ F350 pickup was reported stolen from Calgary in April.

The suspects eventually abandoned the Honda Civic on Highway 97A near Powerhouse Road south of Armstrong. An RCMP police dog handler tracked the suspects from the vehicle which lead to an abandoned house to the east of the highway. Both suspects surrendered to police without further incident, police say.

A 32 year-old man from Calgary and a 23 year-old woman from Manitoba remain in custody. Both suspects are facing charges of possession of stolen property and theft of a motor vehicle. The man was wanted by Kelowna RCMP on two warrants.
