A fire that began in the basement of a Kelowna duplex is being investigated by the RCMP after firefighters extinguished the blaze last night.

The Kelowna Fire Department Dispatch Center received 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke coming from a residence in the 1200 blocke of Belaire Ave at approximately 9:30 p.m., July 2, according to the fire department’s press release.

The first arriving officer reported smoke coming from the rear if the structure and all soffit areas of a large duplex. One side of the duplex was unoccupied and all basement windows were boarded up on the entire duplex.

Firefighters discovered a fire in the basement that had extended up an interior wall to the main floor. They were able to extinguish the blaze.

A man, living in the duplex, was outside when firefighters arrived and no other potential occupants were found inside.

All fire and smoke damage was contained to the interior of structure. The Kelowna Fire Department responded with four engines, a rescue unit and a command vehicle with 19 personnel.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but will be investigated by the RCMP.
