KELOWNA - Firefighters responding to a house fire in McKinley Landing last night had to deal with grass fires sparked by the blaze.

Kelowna Fire Department platoon captain John Kelly said in a press release they were called out around 8 p.m. to reports of a house fire in the 1600 block of Bennett Road.

Whe firefighters arrived, they found a rapidly spreading fire that soon engulfed the house and then spread to the forested areas around the house, Kelly said, with sparks and embers shooting 150 feet into the air.

The house was destroyed, Kelly said. It is unclear from the press release if there were any occupants in the house.

Kelowna Fire Department responded with six engines, two water tenders, a rescue unit and command vehicle along with 25 firefighters, Kelly said.
