Fire department recognizes FireSmart homeowners

KELOWNA - Residents of Gallagher’s Canyon worked hard for the last two years to meet the requirements of a FireSmart community. FireSmart is a national program for homeowners to make their property safer from the threat of a wildfire.

The residents of Gallagher’s got together for work parties throughout the neighbourhood, removing downed debris from the around trees, raking leaves and pine needles. This work was supported by the Gallagher’s Golf Club, which helped remove the bags of material to the landfill for composting.

When homeowners apply FireSmart standards throughout their neighbourhood, they can reduce the potential for fire damage to homes by removing fire fuel from around their properties. FireSmart is a program recommended as part of the City of Kelowna’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan. More information on the FireSmart program is available at the FireSmart website.

Yesterday evening at 7 p.m., members of the Kelowna Fire Department attended the Gallagher’s Canyon Residents’ strata meeting to present them with the FireSmart sign that will be displayed at the entrance to their community.
