The North Westside Fire Rescue’s newest fire chief lasted less than a year.

“By mutual agreement, Alex Van Bruksvoort is no longer leading the North Westside Fire Rescue department," said Bruce Smith, communications officer with the Regional District of Central Okanagan, via email.

"The RDCO thanks him for his work with the department as chief."

Senior captain Nic Cantryn is acting chief until the regional district hires a new paid-on-call chief.  “He’s supported by officers of the department and the RDCO fire services manager,” Smith said.

Van Bruksvoort only spent six months as head of the North Westside Fire Rescue. He was hired in June.

“Paid-on-call members of the department are RDCO employees and remain dedicated to continuing their high level of training and are ready to answer any calls for fire or first medical response needs in their communities,” Smith said.

He said he couldn’t speak to the specifics of why Van Bruksvoort is no longer employed as it is a human resource and privacy matter.

The fire rescue services 2,500 properties with an estimated 1,200 residents, including: Westshore Estates, Killiney Beach, Estamont, Valley of the Sun, Fintry, Upper Fintry, La Casa and Caesar's Landing. It has three fire stations covering roughly 900 square kilometres, according to the regional district.
