Cronenberg's weighty 'A Dangerous Method' leads directors guild nominees

TORONTO - David Cronenberg's historical drama "A Dangerous Method" leads the nominees for the Directors Guild of Canada Awards.

The star-packed cerebral drama, which starred Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud and Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, scored five nominations.

They include best direction, best film, best production design, best picture editing and best sound editing.

Cronenberg faces off in the best direction category against Michael Dowse for his hockey comedy "Goon," Sarah Polley for her summer romance "Take This Waltz" and David Weaver for his noir thriller "The Samaritan."

Other best film contenders include the gangster feature "Edwin Boyd," the sequel "Down the Road Again" and "The Samaritan."

The awards will be presented at a gala in Toronto on Oct. 20. This is the 50th anniversary of the guild.

Other nominees include:

Best TV direction: Kelly Makin for "Flashpoint," David Straiton for "The Firm" and Jeremy Podeswa for "The Borgias" and "Camelot."

Best direction of a TV movie/miniseries: Charles Biname for "Cyberbully," Jon Cassar for "The Kennedys," Paul A. Kaufman for "Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story and Jeff Woolnough for "The Wrath of Grapes: The Don Cherry Story."

Best TV movie/miniseries: "Hannah's Law," "The Kennedys," "Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story" and "The Wrath of Grapes: The Don Cherry Story."

Best TV drama: "The Borgias," "Flashpoint," "Haven" and "Rookie Blue."

Best TV comedy: "Call Me Fitz," "Less than Kind," "Michael Tuesdays and Thursdays" and "Mr. D."

Best family TV: "Degrassi," "Heartland," "How to be Indie" and "R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour."
