B.C. government to press ahead with cuts to BC Ferries service: minister

VICTORIA - B.C.'s transportation minister says the Liberal government is pressing ahead with its plans to make $18.9 million in service cuts at BC Ferries.

Todd Stone says a newly released consultation report confirms the decision to make service cuts to what the government describes as minor and northern routes.

Stone says the service cuts start April 28.

He says the government is also proceeding with its previously announced plan stop a seniors discount by April 1 and instead charge senior half-price passenger fares.

Stone says the government is also moving ahead with installing slot machines on some ferries.

The minister says the government has tried to mitigate tourism impacts on the Bella Coola route on the central coast with increased sailings, but with a smaller vessel.
