Fernie council won't immediately target freeloading forest creatures

FERNIE, B.C. - Urban deer won't have to race for cover if they venture down the streets of Fernie, B.C.
Councillors in the southeastern B.C. city say they will not follow the lead of several other southern Interior communities that have imposed culls to cope with an influx of brazen Bambies.
Mayor Mary Giuliano says a number of residents want permanent removal of deer that have been munching through their area gardens.
But Giuliano says council has decided not to act because it believes the majority of Fernie residents enjoy seeing the creatures wandering free.
That doesn't mean deer won't find themselves in the crosshairs in future.
Giuliano says the situation will be monitored and if habituated deer become aggressive or more numerous, a cull could be considered. (CHBZ)
