A man and two children are dead after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 5A south of Kamloops yesterday.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said in a media release three people were killed in a single vehicle crash around 5:45 p.m. yesterday, Feb. 23, on Highway 5A near Stump Lake, approximately 35 minutes south of Kamloops.

The driver of the vehicle, a 47-year-old male, was dead at the scene. Two children, ages eight and five, were taken to hospital by B.C. Emergency Health Services, where they later died.

Shelkie said an initial investigation suggests the driver of the vehicle failed to navigate a curve, went over a concrete barrier and down a steep embankment.

The highway was closed to allow police and the B.C. Coroners Service to investigate, but was reopened later in the evening, according to DriveBC.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this very tragic time,” stated Cpl. Jodi Shelkie in the release. “The RCMP would like to remind motorists to always drive defensively and cautiously.”
