WEST KELOWNA - No one but the family pet was home when a fire broke out at a West Kelowna home this morning.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue got the call at around 10:10 a.m. today, July 25, and crews arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the lower floor of the home in the 900 block of Westbrook Road.
Assistant Fire Chief Lionel Bateman says in a media release firefighters quickly put out the blaze.
“On arrival, crews were informed that the house was not occupied at the time however a family pet was in the home,” Bateman says. “Unfortunately the family pet did not survive.”
He says the homeowner is the care of Emergency Support Services.
Damage to the home is estimated at $200,000.
Bateman says the cause of the fire was "accidental in nature."
