Three members of a Vernon family, and their dog, safely got out of their burning home thanks to one of the children in the household.
Firefighters were called to a blaze at a two-storey house in the 2400 block of 25 Avenue in the East Hill neighbourhood at around 1 a.m. today, Oct. 12, according to a fire department media release.
Crews arrived to find a fire in a second-floor bedroom.
“Firefighters were able to quickly contain this fire thanks in large part to one of the children in the house who called 911 to report the fire,” deputy fire chief Alan Hofsink said in the release.
“His actions not only alerted firefighters, assisting in a quick response, but also helped to ensure his family exited the building safely.”
The residents were checked for smoke inhalation by paramedics and the family is getting assistance from emergency support services.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
