RCMP are warning residents to be wary of a well-worn telemarketing scam making the rounds again.

Kamloops RCMP have received a report of a scam where the caller claimed that the victim’s computer had a virus.

The call came from what the victim believed to be a computer company, who said they had detected a virus or spyware on her computer, according to a media release.

The caller asked the victim for remote access to her computer, telling her they would fix the problem. The victim believed the scam and gave them access, giving them access to her banking and credit card information.

The RCMP recommended hanging up immediately if someone brings up your computer security system.

They remind the public to never allow remote access to your computer, never give personal information to a stranger over the phone, to only give out banking and credit card information to someone if you made the call or if the phone number is credible, and to buy anti-virus software, but only from a source that you trust.

If you think you have been the victim of a scam, contact your financial institution right away.

If you receive a phone call that you think may be a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
