UPDATE: The cold weather alert ended at 4:53 a.m. Jan. 13.

MERRITT - The cold temperatures mixed with a brisk wind in the Nicola region have Environment Canada issuing an extreme cold warning this morning.

Forecasters say the Nicola area, including Merritt, will experience a period of extreme cold with a wind chill near -35 Celsius this morning, Jan. 11.

"The cold wind chill values will become moderate this afternoon as temperatures rise, but will redevelop tonight," the warning says.

Environment Canada issues extreme cold warnings when "very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia."

For more information on how to deal with the extreme cold and for the latest watches and warnings in B.C. go to Environment Canada's website.
