The extreme weather has taken its toll on the region's ski resorts forcing some lifts to close and the cancellation of night skiing.

With temperatures across the southern Interior hovering at around -20 Celsius, ski resorts around the Thompson-Okanagan are advising skiers and snowboarders to take extra precautions.

Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops has closed three chairlifts because of the cold and the Umbrella Café and washrooms at the base of the Morrisey lift are all so closed. The resort is advising skiers and snowboarders to wear extra layers, cover all exposed skin, use warmer inside boots and gloves and take regular indoor breaks every 30 minutes.

With temperatures forecast for as low as -27 C on Dec. 29, SilverStar Mountain Resort cancelled night skiing and closed the backside of the mountain.

Apex Mountain Resort near Penticton has also cancelled night skiing for the rest of the week. The resort says while the weather may be bone-chillingly cold, the snow conditions at the resort are "fantastic" and more like mid-season.

It appears it's business as usual at Big White Ski Resort but the mountain is advising skiers and snowboarders to dress in extra layers, cover all exposed skin, use hot packs and take regular indoor breaks.
