It's been four years this month since Ryan Shtuka was reported missing at Sun Peaks Resort.

The annual Run for Ryan event at the resort near Kamloops is taking place on Thursday, Feb. 17, followed by the annual candlelight vigil in the evening hosted by the Shtuka family.

The events are open to anyone wanting to show their support for Ryan and his family, support that Ryan’s mom Heather cherishes.

The 20-year-old was reported missing at the mountain resort, located northeast of Kamloops, Feb. 17, 2018. He had been living and working at the resort for two months, and was last seen leaving a house party on Burfield Drive in the village, which was just a short distance from his home.

“Four years have come and gone,” Heather said. “It seems like a lifetime ago and yet it feels as raw as if it happened yesterday. For us, remembering the joy, love and the impact Ryan made in our lives is important. But it is the support and caring that comes from friends, family and strangers that gives us strength.”

Supporters are to meet at the top of the Sunburst Express chairlift at 3 p.m., Feb. 17, to take part in a group ski down the 5 Mile run.

Once the group reaches the village, participants are invited to ride the Village Platter or Village Carpet up to the top, where Ryan was working during his season at Sun Peaks. Complimentary hot chocolate will be provided at the top of the Platter lift. A valid lift ticket is required to access the Sunburst Express chairlift, village platter and village carpet.

“We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and support not only from the Sun Peaks Corporation and the municipality, but the communities surrounding Sun Peaks as well,” Heather said. “I look forward to seeing you there. Look for the terrible skier.”

The candlelight vigil will begin at 6 p.m. at the top of the village near Central Reservations. The event will be live streamed for those who cannot attend.

“Light a candle for Ryan this night so that wherever he finds himself he will know how dearly he is missed,” Heather said. “There will always be a light to guide his way home.”
