Evacuation alert for properties near Snowy Mountain wildfire

KEREMEOS - Four properties are now on evacuation alert reports the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen.

The four properties, two addresses, are on Chopaka Road in Electoral “B”.

The 1910 hectare Snowy Mountain Protected Area wildfire is near Cawston and adjacent to the Lower Similkameen Indian Band.

The alert is for the following properties along Chopaka Road:

  • 1050 Chopaka Rd
  • 1101 Chopaka Rd

Residents are not being asked to leave but in the event and evacuation order is issued they may have limited time to get out, and should prepare themselves now.

Activity on this fire increased midday yesterday, July 28. B.C. Wildfire Services says the fire moved downslope on the north flank into a grassy area. Helicopters were used to cool the fire.

Today, July 29, there are 20 firefighters and three helicopters working on this fire today. They will be establishing a handguard in the draw on the north flank supported by air tanker operations.

Planned hand ignitions will be conducted.
