German police arrest senior mafia figure wanted by Italy

BERLIN - Police in western Germany have arrested a leading member of the Italian mafia who is wanted in his home country since 2013.

Authorities in the state of Saarland, on the border with France, say the 31-year-old Italian is suspected of being the deputy head of a 'ndrangheta crime family.

The German news agency dpa reported the man was arrested Friday by armed police in the state's main city, Saarbruecken.

In January, police arrested more than 160 people and seized 50 million euros ($60 million) in mafia assets in Germany and Italy that were allegedly tied to the 'ndrangheta's Farao-Marincola clan.

A feud between 'ndrangheta clans made headlines in Germany in 2007, when six people were shot dead at a pizzeria in Duisburg.
