BERLIN - A Gypsy from a small Bosnian village who won the best-actor award at last year's Berlin International Film Festival has returned home after failing in his bid for asylum in Germany.

Festival spokeswoman Frauke Greiner said Thursday that Nazif Mujic recently returned to Bosnia with his family of his own accord.

He arrived in Berlin in November and had an asylum bid rejected, then appealed to Berlin state lawmakers for the right of residence. Greiner said he appeared fed up with the uncertainty and length of the process.

Scrap-metal collector Mujic won Berlin's best-actor prize in February 2013 for his role director Danis Tanovic's "An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker." The film portrays Mujic's real-life struggle to save his wife's life after she had a miscarriage.
