ERT called to arrest Oliver man for assault and uttering threats

OLIVER - The Emergency Response Team was called in to help Oliver RCMP arrest a man for assault earlier this week.

Police didn't say much about the assault and uttering threats allegations, but opted for added manpower to make the arrest. Loaded guns were found in the home after they arrested 56-year-old Bradley Cairns Feb. 5.

"Officers determined that any attempt to arrest him could pose a significant risk to the safety of police and civilians," police said in a release in part by Staff Sgt. Kirsten Marshall of Oliver RCMP.

The Emergency Response Team is a highly trained unit of officers, typically armoured and well-armed.

Cairns was arrested at his home without any issue. Police said they found three long rifles, two of which had spent casings in the chamber.

Cairns has been charged for uttering threats and for assault.

He is expected to appear in Penticton court today, Feb. 8.
