RCMP have a 30-year-old Kelowna man was arrested yesterday after numerous calls from the public about a man with a sword acting in an erratic manner in downtown Kelowna.

Just after 1:30 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 13, Kelowna RCMP received reports of an armed man in the downtown core and the area was flooded with officers who located the suspect in the 1300 block of Ellis Street, according to an RCMP media release.

Police took a 30-year-old Kelowna man into custody without incident. A search of the suspect revealed three knives and a large sword. Other objects considered weapons were also located in the man’s belongings a short distance from where he was arrested.

The man was held until a mental health assessment could take place, RCMP said. He was subsequently released on strict conditions and is expected to make a court appearance at a later date.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident while charges are being contemplated.

RCMP say no further information is being released at this time.
