PENTICTON - Penticton was hit with a rash of mailbox thefts last week.

Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says RCMP are investigating a pattern of mailbox break and enters that occurred throughout the city, including a massive breach of mailboxes at Riva Ridge Mobile Home Park where 80 boxes were broken into overnight on Jan. 6.

“Over the last week, group mailboxes at apartment and strata buildings have been getting broken into," Wrigglesworth says.

On Jan. 8, mailboxes were also broken into at 1028 Government St. and eight banks of mailboxes were pried open at a multi-residence complex at 832 Fairview Rd.

"Thieves are looking for identification theft to commit frauds," he says. "They are looking for new credit cards, early tax returns, forms with social insurance numbers on them, whatever they can get.”

He advises residents to empty their mailboxes daily.
