Kamloops RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire at the Travelodge motel on Rogers Way this morning.

A media release from the Kamloops RCMP states that witnesses could smell smoke at around 8 a.m. today, Jan. 30, and they went to check on the situation. They saw a man leave a second-floor room, then get into a pickup truck and drive away. The man is believed to be the same person who is registered to the room.

Hotel registration information is being looked over, but at this time the name and license plate he gave are not providing police with positive identification, RCMP say.

RCMP describe the suspect as a Caucasian male in his mid-30s with facial hair. He was wearing a blue button-down shirt and a backward red baseball cap when he checked in. When he left, witnesses saw him wearing a grey sweater and said he got into a blue Ford truck, which was lifted, has an Alberta license plate and one broken tail light.

The motel room is currently secured until fire investigators can enter.

Anyone with information on this man or the fire is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or leave a tip anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
