Fish, a dog rescued by the BC SPCA animal centre in the Shuswap, has just found his forever home and is happy as ever.

Fish was found last summer in the Kingfisher area in a horrible state. He was found starving and was covered in sores. After months of recovery and a surgery, Fish has fully recovered and  found his forever home just before the holidays.

“We couldn’t be happier for Fish,” Isabell Diederichs with the BC SPCA said in a media release issued today, Jan. 5. “He's the most loving dog who deserves the best home and he has that now.”

Tony and Darlene first read about Fish this summer when he had just been rescued. After grieving the loss of their rescue dog Abby to illness and reading about Fish, they knew it was meant to be. They filled out an application and soon got the news that they were going to be bringing Fish home.

"We read a story about Fish and we just knew he was our dog,” Tony said in the release.

The bond between Fish, Tony and Darlene was instant. As soon as they met, he trusted them and has since been a happy dog.

“We walked out of the animal centre and when we opened the door to our truck he jumped right in,” Tony said. “He didn’t hesitate at all.”

Darlene says they have had a number of rescue dogs over the years and no dog has trusted them as fast as Fish has.

“Considering everything he has been through, his trust in people is just amazing,” she said. “He is just so loving and big hearted.”

Even Ballou, the family's cat who had been close to Abby, immediately approved of the new family addition. They even cuddle when they nap together.

“They got along right from the get-go,” Darlene said. “Fish was so calm and gentle around him.”

Fish has been living his best dog life, as Tony and Darlene take him on walks every day and to the dog beach which Fish is quite a fan of.

"When he knows it is time for a walk Fish will pick up your boots or shoes for you to help speed up the process or he will carry his leash,” Tony said. “We have an amazing dog beach right by the lake that he loves. He has been so good with other dogs and just loves meeting new people.”

Tony and Darlene are extremely grateful for Fish just as they imagine he is for them.

“He rescued me,” said Tony.
