An elk was unlawfully killed and dragged behind a truck for several kilometres, before being dumped on a road near Castlegar, according to the Conservation Officer Service in a recent Facebook post.

Conservation Officers are investigating the incident in the West Kootenays.

On Sunday night, a cow elk was poached in the community of Krestova. The elk was then dragged throughout Krestova and the nearby community of New Settlement behind a light-coloured pickup truck for approximately five kilometres. It was eventually discarded on a road in Pass Creek near Castlegar, according to the service's Facebook post.

"The suspects did not take any meat, and the entire elk (was) unsalvageable. The incident could lead to numerous possible charges," according to the service in the post.
