Elderly Vernon man falls from cliff while hiking, dies

Kalamalka Lake

VERNON - A 72-year-old Vernon man died today, July 27, while hiking at Kalamalka Provincial Park .

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded Saturday, just before 10  a.m., to Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park for a report of a hiker who sustained fatal injuries as a result of a fall from a cliff. He landed in the water below.

The RCMP along with Emergency Health Services attended to a nearby boat launch, where the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is a tragic incident for all those involved, including the citizens on the water who came to the aid of the man, via boat, however were unable to resuscitate him,"  Const. Kelly Brett, said in a press release.

"There are parts of the trail system in the park that can lead to some steep embankments and cliff edges, therefore we want to remind hikers and visitors to the park, to be cautions when hiking in the area."

The investigation into this incident is on-going and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP will continue to work with the BC Coroners Service.

No further information is available for release.
