Effort to save Vernon’s historic Towne Cinema ramps up

FILE PHOTO - Fundraising efforts aimed at saving Vernon’s Towne Cinema are going well with $60,000 of the $70,000 goal already being accrued.

Fundraising efforts aimed at saving Vernon’s Towne Cinema are going well with $60,000 of the $70,000 goal already being accrued.

Christopher John, a fundraising team member, said they have some planned fundraising events in the next two months to help them reach their goal by June, allowing them the time to apply for a federal grant that could match funds raised.

“We have an old-fashioned popcorn cart that will be popping up around town in the coming weeks and months where folks will be able to get authentic movie-style popcorn in return for donations,” John explains of the latest fundraising venture.

The Okanagan Screen Arts Society, which will take over the classic building has a five-year plan in place for repairs and improvements to the theatre.

To get things in the right direction, the society unveiled a new logo following a public poll on social media.

“We got the winning design and it will be used for the theatre going forward,” John said. “It hearkens back to the original Art Deco style of the movie theatre when it opened in 1938, and incorporates the tower from the building facade.”
