KAMLOOPS - Is Edmonton gunning for Kamloops’s title?
In a press conference today, Feb. 17, Northlands CEO Tim Reid said a new arena in Edmonton could have big implications.
“The Northlands Ice Colesium has the potential to make Edmonton the Tournament Capital of Canada,” Reid said.
Mayor Peter Milobar was quick to respond on Twitter.
Milobar says he gets what Reid was saying, but wanted to let them know the title is taken — Kamloops has been Canada’s tournament capital for more than a decade, having registered the trademark 'The Tournament Capital of Canada' in 2002.
"I know what the intent of the clip was, it was just a light-hearted way to let them know it was taken," he says. "We do protect our brand."
If Edmonton is looking for a slogan, he suggests they look at their old one.
"They were the City of Champions, so the Oilers could win them another one of those and they could reclaim that title," Milobar says.
