Early morning fire at Kamloops autism learning centre considered suspicious

Kamloops fire crews extinguished a suspicious fire at a downtown learning centre early this morning.

Firefighters were called to the Social Butterflies Activities and Learning, an autism support and services centre, at 821 Seymour Street just after 3 a.m. today, June 19.

"Flames were reported coming from that locating. Engine 3 arrived first on scene and could see no fire but smelled smoke in the area,” Kamloops Fire Rescue platoon captain Troy Grant says. ”They found the remnants of a fire that had been extinguished, and it was smouldering with some coals and a tiny flames.”

“RCMP were requested as the fire seemed to be suspicious in that there lacked any reasonable possible initiation sources in that area,” Grant says.

The extent of the damage is not yet known.

Both RCMP and Kamloops Fire Rescue are investigating the cause of the fire.
