Early March weather not much help to Thompson-Okanagan snowpacks

While there’s a risk of thunderstorms in the Kamloops and Okanagan regions this afternoon, March 3, a drying trend through the weekend and into next week will not add to the low regional snowpacks.

Rain at the end of February did bring the Okanagan snow pack up to 84% of normal on March 1 from 80% a week earlier and the South Thompson up to 99% of normal from 97%.

But the weekend forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud with temperatures in the 7 Celsius to 9 C range, which is about normal for this time over year. Overnight lows are forecast to be a few degrees below freezing.

“Moving into next week, we might see a system graze through the area on Tuesday and into Wednesday,” Environment Canada meteorologist Derek Lee told iNFOnews.ca. “There might be a chance of precipitation then. Looking at temperatures, if anything falls it looks like it might melt during the day.”

Freezing level is expected to be at 1,000 to 1,100 metres.

Higher elevations might get one to two centimetres of snow later in the week, Lee said.

Environment Canada issued a fog advisory for the Trans-Canada Highway from Rogers Pass to Eagle Pass, which is expected to persist until about noon.

“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations,” the advisory warns. “If travelling, be prepared for areas of near-zero visibility.”

In areas where the temperature drops to freezing or below there could be “freezing fog,” which can make the roads slippery.
