Dusting of mountaintop snow possible as temperatures drop, just in time for the weekend

Kamloops and Okanagan residents may want to enjoy today’s sunshine and warm temperatures because the weekend will feel a lot more fall-like.

Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hartt says a cold front is expected to arrive in the region early Saturday morning, Aug. 29.

Temperatures tomorrow are expected to be nearly 10 degrees cooler than today’s 30-plus highs in Kamloops and the Okanagan.

“It will cool off overnight tonight, and it just won’t get warm Saturday,” she says.

There’s not a lot of moisture associated with the cold front, Hartt says, but any moisture that does come will be in the form of snow above the 2,200 metre level.

“It will be cold enough to snow in the higher elevations. The question is, is there going to be enough moisture?” she says.

Hartt says any snow that does fall won’t stay for long.

Saturday’s daytime high temperatures are forecast to range from 23 C in Kamloops and Penticton, to 22 C in Vernon and Kamloops. On Sunday, expect highs of only 22 C in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton and 23 C in Kamloops.

That’s not far off the normal temperatures for this time of year but it’s going to seem pretty cool after today’s 30-plus temperatures.

Hartt says things should warm up to slightly above normal by Wednesday.
