Duffy hopes to return home by weekend from hospital following surgery

OTTAWA - Sen. Mike Duffy is hoping to return home this weekend to continue his recovery from heart surgery.

A source familiar with his condition says the former broadcaster is still resting at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute from a bypass operation conducted a week ago.

Duffy had the same type of surgery in 2006 to clear blocked arteries, and suffered a mild heart attack in the 1990s.

He is currently suspended from the upper chamber in connection with contested living expenses he filed while sitting in the Conservative caucus.

The RCMP has alleged that Duffy engaged in breach of trust and fraud with regard to his expenses, and bribery for allegedly creating a deal to have those claims repaid.

No charges have been laid, and the allegations have not been tested in court.
