Drunk man arrested in Kamloops after following young girl to school

KAMLOOPS - An intoxicated man was arrested in Kamloops this morning after following a young girl to school.

Kamloops RCMP say at around 8 a.m. today, Sept. 13, they received a report of a suspicious man following a 12-year-old girl on her way to school.

The student was on her way to pick up her friend before heading to Lloyd George Elementary School when a man walking down the same street began to call out and try to get her attention, according to an RCMP media release. The girl did not know the man, police say.

RCMP say when the girl arrived at her friend’s house, the man also approached the property and her friend's mother called police.

Once officers arrived, they found the 35-year-old man to be impaired

"He claimed a case of mistaken identity," Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in the release. "He thought he knew the girl and that is why he was calling out to her and following her."

Turns out the man has outstanding warrants from the Lower Mainland so was arrested.

The suspect is in police custody and is expected to make a court appearance in the near future.
