Drug alert issued in Penticton for fentanyl mix

A drug alert has been issued for Penticton after a light green sample sold as fentanyl tested positive for fentanyl and benzodiazepines.

The mix of benzodiazepines and opioids such as fentanyl can greatly increase the risk of overdose and prolonged sedation.

Interior Health issued a drug testing alert today, Jan 5, which was posted on the Toward the Heart website.

Those overdosing on the drug may not respond to naloxone.

Recommended treatment includes continuing to give breaths and seek medical attention as quickly as possible.

The drug alert is in effect until Jan. 12.

Risk can be reduced by having drugs checked. More information is available on the Toward the Heart website here.
