Kamloops RCMP arrested a man when they found a stolen and loaded handgun in his vehicle Tuesday morning.
Officers were in a parking lot in the 1100 block of 8 Street to do a wellness check on a man after receiving a report he was impaired behind the wheel around 10 a.m. on June 18, according to a press release from police.
They found the man slumped over the steering wheel of a black car.
“During the impaired driving investigation, officers located drug paraphernalia near the driver, as well as a loaded pistol,” Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in the release. “The driver was the lone occupant in the vehicle and a person known to police.”
Police determined the handgun was flagged as stolen out of Texas.
Mounties arrested the man and he received a 24-hour driving prohibition for drug impairment, and a court date related to possession of the firearm.
The investigation is ongoing but police said they anticipate recommending charges.
