A travel advisory is in effect from Hope to Merritt on Highway 5, with heavy snowfall potentially creating an avalanche risk.

"Heavy snowfall is expected next 24 to 48 hours which could increase Avalanche Hazard," reads the Drive BC warning. "Crews are assessing and may be required to close the route with short notice for mitigation works. Check DriveBC.Ca before you travel for updates.

The next update will be at 8 p.m.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for the Coquihalla Highway and the Trans Canada Highway.

"A frontal system laden with subtropical moisture will move across southern B.C. beginning tonight and lasting until Sunday night bringing a messy mix of rain on top of snow on Sunday and the possibility of heavy wet snow at the summit Sunday night," reads the notice.

On the Trans-Canada Highway, from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass, total snowfall accumulation for Sunday and Sunday night may reach 40 centimetres.
