From the big city, to their piece of paradise in the Okanagan, Nik Roughton and his wife Paula Skladan-Roughton have had success follow them; but not without putting in the hard work, focus and dedication.
This powerhouse couple, previously-based Calgary New Home Sales Professionals have just become recent co-owners of Value Plus 3% Real Estate in Vernon, *the number one producing real estate office in the Okanagan for the past six years, joining forces with Randy Skladan, Brian Rogers and Stuart Spanier.
“Paula and I have both been in real estate for 15 years and we share the same drive, passion and commitment to our clients and team,” said Nik who met his wife after he left the oil field and began a career in real estate. “It wasn’t love at first sight… it took me a while to win her over. I married up, way up,” laughed Nik.
It took a little time, but the two came together and have worked in the business, sometimes together and other times apart, but together in life, ever since. They’ve each worked with real estate developers and have managed sales teams, with both Nik and Paula consistently placing in the Top 10 for home sales in Calgary and each having earned numerous Sales and Marketing industry SAM, awards. An incredible mile stone for any professional, they have each sold over 1,000 homes.
For Paula, the move to B.C. from Calgary was driven by the change in lifestyle as well as a solid business opportunity.
“It was always my dream to work with my dad. He is one of the founding partners of Value Plus 3% Real Estate. The timing couldn’t have been better,” said Paula who is currently working on her Managing Brokers licensing. “We wanted to be able to continue a legacy.”
Nik said the opportunity to become part of the incredible ownership group came a little sooner than expected, having just made the move back to Okanagan a year and a half ago with their two children, Nolan, 7, and Aria, 4. “What better place to raise kids than here in Vernon.”
The ethics and value behind Value Plus 3% is something the pair is passionate about. The three per cent flat fee, across the board, commission applies to every home we sell. That says a lot,” said Paula, who assured they will not inflate the price of a home to get a listing. “We do what we know is right and best for the clients and we really respect the responsibility we hold.”
Nik says that despite offering the much lower commission, it does not take away from the knowledge, expertise, experience and marketing they, their partners and the seven other realtors, office manager and listing coordinator provide.
Along with the expected web site listings, full MLA exposure and print advertising, Value Plus 3% provides a different outlook on listings, says Nik. As new co-owners, the pair is actively looking to grow and spread their wings.
“Our focus is on how we market and how we grow. We are actively seeking skilled, passionate and talented agents to join our team and are now looking for franchise opportunities to expand,” said Paula, the first will likely be in Kelowna.
Along with Value Plus 3% Real Estate’s focus on growth and service, they are also a company that gives back and participates in the community. They support other local businesses, participate in events and sponsor a sports team. Nik also gives his time to coaching youth hockey, and soccer.
“Giving back is a huge part. It’s a big part of who we are as people and as a team here at VP3,” said Nik.
