Don't let the warm temperatures fool you, winter is not over yet in Okanagan, Kamloops

This coming week should continue to be warmer than normal for February in the Kamloops and the Okanagan with daytime highs up to 9 Celsius by midweek and overnight lows mostly above freezing.

Still, there’s a chance of some light snow or flurries today, Feb. 14, and overnight but not enough to replenish the dwindling snowpack.

The Okanagan snowpack fell to 85% of normal as of Feb. 8 from 92% the week before. The South Thompson snowpack was at 100% on Feb. 8 but that’s down from 102% a week earlier.

The warm weather may not last into next week.

“Winter is not over yet,” Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon told iNFOnews.ca. “We might be ending February on a colder note, just not as cold as we saw in December and January because the sun has more power to heat the surface.”

While no meteorologist likes to predict temperatures too far into the future, we could have some daytime highs dip below freezing with overnight temperatures getting down to the -5 C to -10 C range next week, Sekhon said.

While average high temperatures at this time of year are about 4 C with overnight lows of -5 C, it got down to -18.3 C in Kamloops on Feb. 14, 1979, and -15 C in Penticton in 1990.

The mountain passes are looking at light snow today and into tonight with two to six centimetres possible in some locations then clearing Tuesday.

Alpine snow base levels for regional ski hills:

  • 186 cm – Sun Peaks
  • 152 cm – Silver Star
  • 154 cm – Big White
  • 160 cm – Apex
