LUMBY - There’s an outpouring of support for the young family of a Lumby man who died in a snowmobiling accident last weekend.

He has been identified by friends as Travis Squair, the president of the Lumby/Mabel Lake Snowmobile Club. Those who knew him describe him as a cheerful, generous person who never hesitated to support others.

“You could not have met a more genuine, down to earth person,” Jackie Moore says. “He was always there to help, whether you were a good friend or a stranger.”

Squair grew up in Lumby and worked on his family’s cattle farm. In the past year, he and his wife welcomed a baby girl into the world and friends say he was a wonderful father.

“He was very much a family man,” Moore says. “It’s just a huge loss for the community.”

Squair was snowmobiling with friends on March 4 when he reportedly lost control of his machine and landed in a creek. He could not be revived.

Friends call it a freak accident and say Squair was an experienced rider who always looked out for others’ safety.

An online auction with donations from numerous local businesses is being held to raise money for Squair’s wife and newborn. Memorial decals are also in the works, as well as a memorial ride on Dec. 10 — Squair’s birthday and the date of his first ride every year.

Many friends and community members have come together behind the scenes to organize the fundraising activities, Moore says.

“It was a no-brainer, no-question to do this because he would’ve done it for any of us,” Moore says.
