Distraught man blocks morning bridge traffic in Kelowna

KELOWNA – RCMP had to remove a distraught man from the W.R. Bennett Bridge after he brought morning bridge traffic to a standstill at the start of rush hour today.

Cpl. Joe Duncan says police received reports that a “distraught” man was running in traffic just before 8 a.m., Dec. 7.

The 48-year-old Kelowna man was taken into custody for his own safety and the safety of motorists.

He is known to police and Duncan describes him as having “mental health issues.” He was taken to Kelowna General Hospital for assessment.

“Hopefully he gets what he needs at KGH,” Duncan says.

Traffic was shut down for more than an hour, causing backups for several kilometres in both directions.

Duncan could not confirm if it was a suicide attempt.
