Distracted driver runs red light, hits city bus in Kelowna

KELOWNA – A Penticton woman, police suspect was distracted while driving, ran a red light at Bernard Avenue and caused a crash that sent two people to hospital Sunday evening.

The driver of a white Pontiac Grand Am was northbound on Ethel Street just after 7:30 p.m., Feb. 28. She failed to stop for a red light at Bernard Avenue and crashed into the side of bus traveling eastbound.

After the collision the Grand Am went off the road and came to rest in the yard of a home on the 900-block of Bernard Avenue. An officer on patrol came across the collision and determined the Grand Am was driven by a 20-year-old woman from Penticton.

A media release from the RCMP says alcohol is not suspected but distracted driving may have been a contributing factor.

Two women on the bus, both from the Kelowna area, were injured and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
