A group of three snowmobilers did everything right in their effort to get help for their injured comrade earlier this week.

They were riding in the Greystokes area east of Kelowna, Monday, March 13, when a member of the group was seriously injured. They used an inReach satellite device to transmit their location to the RCMP, who called in Central Okanagan Search and Rescue at about 1 p.m.

They snowmobilers then lit a fire and stayed put while waiting for help to arrive.

“The sledders did everything right,” search manager Kevin Birnie said in a news release. “They had an InReach, fire starter, warm clothes and snacks. It made the wait that much more comfortable for their friend.”

Because of the severity of the injury and freezing rain, a medical team was sent out by helicopter while a ground team followed on snowmobiles.

“As visibility decreased, the helicopter was forced to leave, so the subject was transported out by the snowmobile team on a medical toboggan,” the news release says. “The 29-year-old subject was handed off to B.C. Ambulance Service around 5:30 p.m. and taken to Kelowna General Hospital.”
