UPDATE: Delivery truck engulfed in flames at Kelowna Canada Post location

A Kelowna man was just about to head to bed when multiple explosions rocked his home near Bay Avenue.

Chico Newell said the windows of his home rattled from a blast so he went to investigate at roughly 2 a.m. Saturday, May 23.

“You could feel it here,” he said. “I looked out the back window and saw a large a huge plume of smoke rising.”

He left his house, and heard a second explosion, before finding that a delivery truck and trailer at the Canada Post loading facility on Baillie Avenue had been engulfed in flames. Emergency crews were on scene, he said.

“It was a contractor's vehicle that was involved. There were no injuries, and there was no mail in the vehicle,” said Canada Post media relations officer Phil Legault.

There was some smoke and a window was damaged, Legault said.

The fire has been deemed suspicious and the RCMP are currently investigating, said Kelowna Fire Department platoon captain Tim Light.

The fire department responded to a 9-1-1 call at roughly 1:48 a.m. with 17 personnel, he said. The Kelowna RCMP and BC Ambulance services were also on scene this morning.
