Day of Sucwentwecw

Local students will get to learn about First Nations culture during the first Day of Sucwentwecw in April.

KAMLOOPS – A day affirming relationships and celebrating local First Nations history is coming to local schools following a suggestion from the local teacher association.

The day will focus on recognizing and celebrating the history of Secwepemc people and other Aboriginal people in the territory by providing students to better understand and respect the history of local First Nations.

The first Day of Sucwentwecw will be April 7, 2014, which falls within the New Year on the traditional Secwepemc calendar. The day will include activities for students as well as a circle of recognition and affirmation ceremony to between First Nations and education leaders.

A report and recommendation will follow the day this year and the district will decide whether to continue the Day of Sucwentwecw on an annual basis.
